The luxury of not being
expected anywhere.

Every familiar room contains an accumulated version of us. Friends know which story we usually tell. Colleagues know what we are responsible for. Family knows which role we occupy before we speak.

Travel interrupts that machinery. In an unfamiliar place, biography loses some of its authority. The person at the next table does not know your position, your patterns or the version of you that other people have learned to expect.

Anonymity is not emptiness. It is temporary freedom from repetition.

Longstanding relationships are valuable partly because they remember us. They can also become resistant to change: a new behaviour is interpreted through an old archive.

Strangers work with less evidence. They encounter the person present now. This is why a single journey can make someone more conversational, adventurous or still. The destination creates distance; the group makes a different self socially possible.

Escape alone is a weak promise. If the freer self exists only abroad, travel becomes a temporary costume.

The better question is what the unfamiliar revealed. Perhaps it was an appetite for solitude, a willingness to initiate, or the discovery that one can belong without performing. The journey succeeds when that knowledge survives the flight home.
